Meadowsweet -Queen of the ditches

It’s no wonder this beautiful plant has been a celebrated herb since records began. Some ancient cultures used it in potions as an attractor for love, peace and happiness, others used Meadowsweet baths to calm rages and anxiety; it was used to cover floors in homes and public places and churches to disguise nasty smells; but it’s most prevalent use over the centuries has been for its medicinal benefits as a painkiller, an aid to digestion and an anti-inflammatory. It was one of the most sacred herbs used by Druids in ritual and medicine, it was a favourite of medieval herbalists and of course it played an important part in the development of Aspirin.

Beautiful meadowsweet, ‘the queen of the ditches’ is rated by the Royal Horticultural Society as a perfect plant for pollinators, attracting moths, dragonflies, hoverflies, ladybirds and other pollinating insects and we love that we have a fabulous natural crop growing prolifically here in the natural ‘nature corridors’ around our farm.

We harvest flowers in early August to make our amazing meadowsweet sugar. The gentle freshness of the Highlander milk carries the flavour perfectly and our Highland Meadow ice cream is something to behold! We’ve also created a Meadowsweet & Raspberry sorbet for our dairy free customers.  Each year we run a Limited Edition of half litre Highland Meadow tubs available towards the end of August.
